The Puppy Blues…
The Puppy Blues is a term I discovered a few years ago that describes a sense of sadness and loss when bringing home a new puppy.
It can happen to anyone.
All of that anticipation and hope and goals for your new life with your new puppy seem very distant and what you assumed puppyhood with your new best friend would feel like… just doesn’t.
You may be feeling frustrated, anxious, worried and sad with the way things are going. But the good news is, things can improve.
First, take care of you. You won’t be able to be the best puppy parent if you’re not your best. This could be asking a friend to puppysit while you grab a cup of coffee or get to take a nap!
Next, grab a journal and write down a few hopes you had for your relationship with your puppy and how you had hoped puppy raising would go. Make sure that you are specific such as:
Puppy will enjoy their crate.
Puppy will learn potty training skills.
Puppy will cuddle and snuggle.
Puppy will not bite and nip.
Then, create a plan of action!
Addressing all of the challenges at once may seem overwhelming. However, taken one at a time, you can significantly improve each item on your list.
